Parents naturally want the best for their children. 

During the college-planning process, that can mean researching schools, tracking deadlines, reviewing essays, and offering advice. 

But one of the most valuable things parents can do is help without taking ownership of the process away from the student. 

Start With Questions 

Instead of beginning with, “Here is where you should apply,” try asking: 

What kind of college experience do you want? 

What subjects interest you? 

What careers are you curious about? 

What type of environment would help you thrive? 

Those conversations help students develop their own voice and make more thoughtful decisions. 

Let Students Take Responsibility 

College planning offers students an opportunity to practice independence. 

They should gradually learn to research schools, manage deadlines, communicate with admissions offices, request recommendations, and complete applications themselves. 

Parents can provide structure and encouragement, but students also need ownership. 

“Parents do not have to take over the journey to make a meaningful difference.” 

Talk About Money Early 

Financial planning should be part of the college conversation from the beginning. 

Families should discuss tuition, scholarships, financial aid, housing, travel, and what they can realistically afford. 

These conversations help students build college lists that are both aspirational and practical. 

Support, Guide, Encourage 

Parents do not need to become college admissions experts. 

A mentor or advisor can provide additional guidance while allowing parents to remain supportive partners.
